Sydney bookshops run the full gamut from cash and carry remainder tables to glorious spaces revelling in ideas, imagination, and personal service. We favour the latter type.

Ariel Booksellers
Ariel is open from 10.00am till midnight seven days a week. It's a fabulous place to browse through one of Sydney's best selections of art and design titles, and an absorbing array of books on philosophy, religion, food ... life's little essentials. The children's section is selective and there's a spot for the kids to sit and fidget while you make your choices. If you're buying a present you can pick up a card and a few chocolates to adorn the stylish Ariel wrapping. People who work there are always helpful.
Books plus: Postcards + Haighs Chocolate + Late Trading
Address: Oxford Street, Paddington (Heading towards the city from Paddington, it's a few minutes from Victoria Barracks, on the opposite side.)

Abbeys
Two exceptional specialist bookshops in one!
... Abbeys: best of crime, fiction, history, science + philosophy,
... Language Book Centre: exceptional foreign language section (books + DVDs) + a comprehensive selection of books on the English language.
... and within walking distance, Galaxy Bookshop: Australia’s largest selection of science fiction, fantasy, horror.
Books plus: Special Services for Language Teachers and Schools
Address: 131 York Street, Sydney (About half a block from Sydney Town Hall; head for the QVB and veer left.)

Books Kinokuniya
Voted the best bookshop in Sydney by Sasha Yee, our web developer. You can easily lose a day wandering through 300,000+ titles (predominantly English and Japanese) in Sydney’s "largest global bookstore". It has a wide selection of design, architecture and photography books from around the world and comics, Manga and magazines you won't find anywhere else. Also sells Japanese stationery, paper and cards.
Books plus: Art Gallery + Café + Discount Card
Address: Galleria Victoria, Level 2, 500 George Street, Sydney (Two floors above street level opposite the Sydney Town Hall + the QVB.)

Berkelouw Books
Slim, with a double-storey of glass facing the street, Berkelouw has contemporary selections downstairs and rare and second-hand books upstairs. Excellent selection of the cream of crop in latest publications at the front downstairs, with judicious selections in art, history, etc. that don’t seem to replicate those across the road at Ariel. Café on second level overlooks Oxford Street. The coffee and cakes are good and it's a pleasant break as you climb further and further into the heights of the second-hand section.
Books plus: Café + Collectors' Editions + Book Rental
Address: 19 Oxford Street, Paddington (Walking from the city, it takes about half an hour along Oxford Street, with lots to distract you on the way.)
